How Oily Skin Occurs, Its Effects and How to Care For Oily Skin
Oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily matter called sebum. When glands are overly productive, the excess sebum present in the gland sacs promotes bacteria called Proprionobacterium acnes to flourish. Sebum also clogs pores resulting in bacteria proliferation. This is how acne occurs.
This is where skin care can get tricky. People who have severely active glands want to remove excess sebum, but it is easy to get carried away and to be overly aggressive. Stripping skin of all its natural oil is actually counter productive. Glands will produce more sebum because skin is being deprived of oil.
Ideally, skin care should remove excess oil without triggering more production. Bearing this in mind, here are important cautions and steps:
1. Be careful not to cleanse too often or too harshly. Avoid any products with alcohol.
2. Use tepid water because hot water strips your skin of moisture.
3. Use a nonalcoholic based toner to remove traces of dirt, oil and makeup.
4. Exfoliate weekly. Exfoliation, when done correctly, will clear dead skin cells and unclog pores to prevent future breakouts.
5. Be sure to check skin care products labels and list of ingredients. The product should be oil free and noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores).
6. Chose a moisturizer that has been specifically formulated for oily skin. Again, look for noncomodegenic products.
7. Weekly use of a clay mask can help clean deeply into pores and removes dead skin cells.
8. Use a noncomodegenic sunscreen daily that is specifically made for skin with excess oil.
There are other factors that play an additional role in the production of excess oil such as inheriting poor genes. But with proper skin care, oily skin can be controlled.
