The news has added strength to the new campaign launched by Roaccutane sufferers in the UK last month to launch legal proceedings against the manufacturer Roche.
In the US alone the Food and Drug Administration says 147 people taking Roaccutane โ marketed in the UK as Accutane, which affects the bodys central nervous system, either committed suicide or were hospitalised for suicide attempts from 1982 to May 2000.
The drug has been linked with severe depression and suicidal tendencies and already pressure from the new UK group has led to an investigation by the Medical Control Agency (MCA), the body responsible for the licensing of prescription drugs in the UK.
Existing pressure on UK medical authorities will increase in the light of this incident and comes following the raising of the issue in both the Westminster and Scottish parliaments.
Said Liam Grant, the international coordinator of the Accutane Medical Action Groups: โGiven the dreadful record of this drug it is imperative that the US authorities ascertain as soon as possible just what the situation was.โ
Accutane is licensed in the UK for the treatment of severe cystic acne and guidelines state that its prescription should be by dermatologists only and as a last resort medicine. Published studies carried out by St Jamess University Hospital, Leeds, show that 74% of patients prescribed the drug in the UK have mild or moderate acne. It has also been shown that it is possible to obtain the drug over the Internet in a matter of minutes.
Official figures released by the MCA show that the numbers of those using Accutane and alleging adverse side effects is high. The MCA have received 1,187 reports of suspected adverse reactions associated with Accutane. Of these reports 15 relate to suicides, 10 to suicide attempts and 13 to suicide ideation. The total number of suspected psychiatric adverse reactions including those relating to suicide is 236.
The allegations against the drug manufacturers Roche have led to legal proceedings in the USA with similar litigation planned from UK victims seeking a full investigation into Accutane and a more severe labelling of the product.
